Approve the Service-Connected Disability Survivorship of Garret Kaul Miller - Barstow Fire Protection District - Fire Captain.

Requested Benefit:
1. Optional Death Allowance (Government Code §31787)
Staff Recommendation:
1. Garret Kaul Miller is permanently incapacitated for the performance of duties as he died as the result of injuries he sustained; therefore, a disability survivorship should be granted. (Member deceased on October 21, 2024)
2. Garret Kaul Miller’s death was a result of injuries arising out of the course of his employment; therefore, his death is service-connected.
3. The benefit type payable to the eligible minor children, McKenna Renee Miller and Wyatt Kaul Miller, is payable under Government Code section §31787 as an Optional Death Allowance (Duty Related Disability Survivorship).
4. Staff shall initiate Optional Death Allowance benefits with an effective date of October 22, 2024, the day after last day of regular compensation.
BACKGROUND:
Fire Captain Garret Kaul Miller served almost a decade of his career with the Barstow Fire Protection District.
