FROM: Debby Cherney, Chief Executive Officer
SUBJECT: Board of Retirement Meeting Compensation
RECOMMENDATION:
title
Review and make a recommendation to the Board of Retirement about whether to request that the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adjust per meeting compensation up to $320.
body
BACKGROUND:
On September 27, 2026, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1619, a bill sponsored by the Orange County Employees Retirement System (OCERS) that would enable both County retirement systems, as well as those governed by the Public Employees’ Retirement Law, to increase the per meeting compensation to up to $320 per meeting.
Presently, all but the elected general and safety Board members are eligible to receive meeting compensation of up to $100 for attendance at Board or Board Committee meetings. In the case of SBCERA and other County systems, this new legislation would allow that to be increased up to $320 per meeting, only if duly noticed and approved by the County Board of Supervisors.
For the last few years, SBCERA has paid total meeting fees as follows:
FY 2024-25 $10,500 (105 compensable meetings)
FY 2025-26 $11,800 (118 compensable meetings)
FY 2026-27 YTD $3,200 (32 meetings through 9/30/2027)
Using a rough average number meetings per year, the full cost to implement the compensation adjustment would be approximately $25,000 per year. Incremental costs for per meeting fees are not included in the FY 2026-27 budget, but could easily be absorbed by underspending in other budget categories.
Staff recommends that the Executive Committee discuss whether to recommend to the full Board to make the request of the County Board of Supervisors to adjust the per meeting compensation.
