title

Approve updates to Benefits Policy No. 001 - Payment of Survivors’ Allowances.

body

BACKGROUND:

General Policy No. 005 involves the periodic review of Board policies and indicates that the Administrative Committee review Benefits policies every three years.

On March 31, 1975, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adopted a Resolution implementing the provisions of Article 15.6 - Survivors’ Allowances of the County Employees’ Retirement Law that provides for augmented retirement benefits to replace Social Security Coverage, which ceased on December 31, 1975.  The benefits are payable to the survivors of a member, who died while in active service. As part of the adoption of Article 15.6 on April 12, 1994, the Board of Supervisors adopted Government Code section 31855.12, specifying the amount of a payment to a survivor.

Benefits Policy No. 001 formalizes the Board of Supervisor’s adoption of Article 15.6, and subsequently section 31855.12.  The Policy was last reviewed on February 1, 2018 with minor changes.  At present, after review of the policy, it remains in compliance and staff does not recommend any substantive changes.
